La Catedral

Granada cathedral

It was built after The Catholic Kings reconquered the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada from its Arab rulers in 1492.

Gothic at its early plans, the ulterior Spanish Renaissance designs are also feasible. The architect Enrique Egas started building it where the city’s main mosque was in 1523, before the well-known architect and sculptor Diego de Siloe took over for nearly four decades. Subsequent architects continued building it. One of them was the famous Alonso Cano, a painter, architect and sculptor born in Granada who introduced Baroque elements. Cano’s main façade of the cathedral resembles a triumphal arch. In total, it took 181 years to build it.

It is worth taking a look at the artworks kept within the Cathedral of Granada, such us sculptures from Pedro de Mena, from its mentor Alonso Cano and even paintings by the famous artist El Greco.

Adjacent to the Cathedral is the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic Kings are buried.
